    419 Scambaiting

    30th January 2007

Came across the 419 eater scambaiting site. I did get tons of scam emails, but never thought of them as of an opportunity to unveil the identity (or at least get a photo) of the scammer. This must be fun - unveiling scammers :) , especially when the scammer is pushed to waste his money for some fictional “hotel booking” or “identity proof donations”. It’s like reversing the roles of cat and mouse :) . Nice work, 419eater!

The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada (2005)

    27th January 2007

Yesterday I watched this. This is the movie which can be said to “be different, not like others”.
I will try not to retell the plot - for this, visit IMDB’s page for the three burials.

dotProject 2.0.4 on GoDaddy.com shared hosting

    22nd January 2007

In one of my recent posts about project management software I stated the desire to extensively test dotProject 2.0.4. However, GoDaddy.com shared hosting appears incompatible with dotProject: the right to CREATE TEMPORARY TABLES in MySQL is not granted, but is needed by dotProject.

    Here’s sample error:

    query failed(CREATE TEMPORARY TABLE tasks_sum SELECT task_project, COUNT(distinct task_id) AS total_tasks,
    SUM(task_duration * task_percent_complete * IF(task_duration_type = 24, 8.0, task_duration_type))/
    SUM(task_duration * IF(task_duration_type = 24, 8.0, task_duration_type)) AS project_percent_complete FROM `tasks` GROUP BY task_project)

I tried looking for solutions, and here’s what I found…

    Project management software

    21st January 2007

I decided to streamline my project management procedures with some kind of software, as the number of concurrent projects is increasing, and more and more time is lost both for switching tasks and trying to grasp a-new the global view of the project each time I turn to it.

Decisions in 10 minutes or less

    21st January 2007

Brian Valentine is said to be the author of the motto: “Decisions in 10 minutes or less, or the next one is free“.

I came across this motto accidentally while surfing the web, and think it’s worth writing down.

For more details you can see the story behind the Brian Valentine managing Windows 2000 release.

There is also the “quotes” page at WarpedVisions, which has the one about decisions in 10 minutes, as well as many other quotes.

SPA (Snap Preview Anywhere) WordPress Plugin

    3rd January 2007

More and more often I came across “snap previews” appearing on the links in other blogs. So I decided to try it on my blog as well…

The Snap Preview Anywhere is a WordPress Plugin to display those previews. The actual service, providing the previews, is snap.com. They also offer the FireFox Snap search engine (top-right in FF), though I don’t quite get it’s intended purpose…

The plugin page has all the necessary instructions (and even more), so won’t copy-paste here.

The only unanswered question is “Does my blog really needs this?”.
I’ll let it be for the time being… if it gets too annoying, will remove. Please comment if you think that snap previews do help somehow, and if you think that “useless” is not about snap previews.

Update: snap preview anywhere is annoying, if used on all the links. So I decided to leave SPA on for external links only, and (thanks to the new version 1.2) now the preview appears only when hovering the tiny image to the right from the link itself. This is now much less annoying, but still allows to see the preview of the linked page, if you desire to do so.

Pentium M vs Pentium 4 performance comparison using Super Pi

    2nd January 2007

Recently I was asked to measure the performance of my LG LM70 Express notebook (configuration 32HR or something like this). As I like small programs, I grabbed Super Pi and ran it:
